The streetcar derailment at the Zytglogge in the city of Berne last February was caused by excessive speed. The driver had lost control due to a medical problem, according to the investigation report.

According to the report published on Wednesday by the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (Sust), the vehicle belonging to the municipal transport company Bernmobil drove over a switch at 45 km/h instead of the prescribed 12 km/h.

The accident occurred on February 1 of this year. The derailed streetcar rolled onto Kornhausplatz, where it came to a halt 60 meters from the tracks. Two people, including the streetcar driver, were slightly injured.
