Women leave their parents' home earlier than men. At the age of 20, almost a third of them have moved out, compared to only 23 percent of men. By the age of 30, almost 90 percent of men are independent, compared to 97 percent of women. On average, half of all young adults are no longer living with their mother, father or both parents at the age of 22, according to a survey by the Federal Statistical Office (BFS) of 15- to 39-year-olds. After leaving home, they mostly live in the vicinity of their parents and maintain close contact. The physical distance from the parental home increases with age. Young people from French- and Italian-speaking Switzerland move out earlier. Women reach the 50 percent mark of those who have moved out at 21.5 years of age, while men do so at 22.8 years. The difference increases to 15 percentage points among 25-year-olds. 83 percent of women and 68 percent of men have moved out by then. This difference decreases with age, but is still seven percentage points at the age of 30. When dividing younger women and men into age groups, the BFS found that the older generations (1978-1987) moved out earlier than the younger ones (1988-2002). For example, 39 percent of women in the older group had moved out by the age of 20, compared to 26 percent in the younger group. The same trend was found for men. The differences due to educational level are less pronounced. Generally, it can be seen that people with a tertiary education move out earlier. For example, 35 percent of women with a university degree had moved out by the age of 20, compared to 31 percent without a tertiary degree. This is also true for men. At the age of 30, 93 percent of university graduates have moved out, compared to 85 percent of men without a tertiary education.
