Minimum wage is largely observed in Ticino

Two years after it came into force, the Ticino Department of Economic Affairs and Finance has checked compliance with the minimum wage. Almost four percent of the employers checked were found to be in breach.

Specifically, the salary conditions of 21,390 employees working in a total of 4,450 companies were reviewed, as the canton announced on Tuesday.

A total of 174 employers were found to be in breach of the Minimum Wage Act. This corresponds to 3.9 percent of the employers inspected. This affected 482 employees or 2.3 percent of the employees inspected.

The Department of Economic Affairs and Finance adds that most of the violations were due to calculation errors on the part of employers. Most employers had paid the difference in wages owed before the fine was issued.

The inspections covered all sectors of the economy that are not covered by a collective labor agreement, the report concludes.
