Three people have died in a hiking accident in the Vaud Alps. A mother and two children fell around 300 meters down the Rochers de Naye above Veytaux near Montreux. They were found dead on Friday below a steep path.
The Vaud cantonal police announced on Saturday that the victims were Dutch nationals. The 57-year-old mother and her 25-year-old daughter lived in the Netherlands and were on vacation in Switzerland. The 22-year-old son lived in the Lausanne region.
The three people had been reported missing on Thursday evening. The police were told that the three had not been in touch since Wednesday morning. As a result, the police launched a large-scale search for them. Helicopters from Rega, the "Héli Lausanne" company and an army Super Puma were deployed.
Bodies discovered thanks to thermal imaging cameras
The bodies were found thanks to the use of thermal imaging cameras in the helicopters, a police spokesman told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Saturday on request. This was later on Friday morning.
Mountain specialists from the Vaudois police and a rescue specialist from the Montreux rescue team were also deployed, along with other police officers. The public prosecutor's office and the police launched an investigation.
According to the police spokesman, the authorities are assuming an accident. The Rochers de Naye is a 2042-metre-high mountain above Montreux. A cog railroad leads from the well-known town on Lake Geneva up to the summit.
