Following the devastating landslides in Schwanden GL at the end of August last year, 15 damaged buildings have to be demolished. The work started this week. The first buildings will be gone in 14 days.

Parallel to the work on the houses, a protective dam is being built in the danger zone. There is still a risk of 45,000 cubic meters of debris sliding into the valley, as Ruedi Stüssi, head of the natural hazard commission of the municipality of Glarus Süd, told the media in Schwanden GL on Friday.

The work has already started, although the required statement from the federal government and the canton is still pending. According to Stüssi, this is based on the Police Act. This stipulates the protection of the population. However, until the statement and the associated permits are in place, only the shell of the building can be completed.

At the end of August 2023, around 30,000 cubic meters of debris and mud severely damaged a residential area in Schwanden. Around 100 people were evacuated in the meantime.
