Nagra welcomes a possible referendum on the nuclear repository

The National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) welcomes a possible referendum on the final nuclear repository. Nagra CEO Matthias Braun said that the authority also hopes that legitimization by the people will speed up the process.
In an interview with the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" newspaper on Tuesday, Braun said that a project of this dimension requires direct democratic legitimization in addition to a technical review.
Objections could block the process, he said. He would interpret any approval by the Swiss electorate as a "strong signal" to move forward.
Last week, a committee called for the people to decide on the project after parliament. Among other things, opponents criticized the lack of a plan B. "If the people reject the deep geological repository in a possible referendum in 2030, for example, the ball will be in the politicians' court," said Baur in a recent interview. Responsibility for the waste would then be passed on to the next generation.
