AHV and IV pensioners in need of assistance who are entitled to supplementary benefits should increasingly be able to live at home thanks to care. The National Council voted in favor of a corresponding amendment to the law on Thursday.

The bill aims to reduce the burden on retirement and nursing homes. The large chamber approved the bill in the overall vote with 129 votes in favor and 59 against. A motion to reject the bill by the SVP parliamentary group failed in the Council.

The majority of the National Council then also followed the proposals of its Social Security and Health Committee (SGK-N). Depending on need, supplementary benefits are to be used to support household help and additional contributions for a night assistance service, a meal service, driving services and companionship as well as an emergency call system.

The Council rejected a red-green minority motion to extend supplementary benefits to include support and assistance with everyday living, a visiting service and advice and coordination.

It also voted in favor of assistance in the psychosocial area in line with the SGK-N. This includes support for maintaining self-determination and independence in everyday life, social and societal participation and the prevention of social isolation, immobility and mental crises.

The next step is for the Council of States to decide on the bill.
