Three quarters of the reduction in Switzerland's greenhouse gas emissions is to be achieved domestically. This was decided by the National Council on Wednesday when discussing the CO2 Act for the period after 2024, by 103 votes to 91.
In contrast to the Council of States, the National Council has thus set a concrete target. For the SP, the 75% domestic target is already too unambitious. The center wanted to keep value creation in Switzerland with the concrete target. And: Switzerland should make its contribution to reducing emissions, demanded the Greens.
The FDP and SVP, on the other hand, wanted to follow the Council of States. As requested by the Federal Council, it had decided to reduce greenhouse gas emissions primarily in Switzerland, but without a figure. This should be determined by the Federal Council.
A domestic reduction target of 75 percent is not realistic without stronger measures, said spokeswoman Susanne Vincenz-Stauffacher (FDP/SG). It is also about credibility.
The Federal Council also did not want to write a figure into the law. The government could still set a figure at ordinance level, said Environment Minister Albert Rösti. In the version of the draft law passed by the Council of States, there is a potential reduction of around two thirds in Switzerland.
The domestic reduction target is not new. The current CO2 Act already stipulates a 75 percent share.
