In future, people with walking disabilities should not have to pay parking fees in public parking lots. This is the demand of the National Council. On Tuesday, it approved a corresponding motion by Philipp Matthias Bregy (center/VS).

The decision was made by 125 votes to 57 with 9 abstentions. The proposal will now go to the Council of States.

Bregy argued that in many cantons and municipalities, people with walking disabilities are already allowed to park free of charge. This is consistent in that, according to the current federal ordinance, people with walking disabilities are also allowed to park in no-parking zones or outside marked parking spaces. This rule should now be extended to public parking spaces.

The Federal Council is also concerned to ensure and promote the mobility of people with walking disabilities, said Transport Minister Albert Rösti. However, according to the constitution, the cantons are responsible for road traffic charges. The federal government could not tell the cantons and municipalities to waive parking fees. Eight years ago, the Council of States used this argument to reject a similar motion.
