The National Council wants to provide the Federal Institutes of Technology in Zurich and Lausanne and four other research institutes with CHF 11,216.2 million in federal funding between 2025 and 2028. This is 100 million more than the Federal Council would like.
On Wednesday, the Grand Chamber approved a corresponding motion when discussing the Federal Council's dispatch on the promotion of education, research and innovation in the aforementioned years. It came from the majority of the Science, Education and Culture and Finance Committees.
Applications from minorities who wanted to provide less or even more money were rejected. This concerns the financing of the so-called ETH Domain, which includes the four research institutes Eawag, WSL, Empa and PSI in addition to ETH Zurich and EPFL Lausanne.
Eawag is the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, WSL is the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research, Empa is the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology and PSI is the Paul Scherrer Institute.
