In 2023, the Swiss National Science Foundation funded research projects with a total of CHF 961 million. It used a further CHF 235 million for transitional measures due to the exclusion of Swiss researchers from the European Horizon funding program.
A total of 5,500 research projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) were underway at the end of 2023, as announced by the SNSF on Thursday. Around 21,000 researchers were involved in these projects, 39.7 percent of whom were women.
Last year, the SNSF approved grants for 1,800 new research projects. According to the SNSF, the demand for funding increased more than the available budget last year. As a result, it was not possible to fund all the projects submitted that deserved funding due to their quality and importance.
Most of the projects approved by the SNSF last several years. These include projects from all scientific disciplines. In 2023, for example, the SNSF approved a research project that aims to develop measures to combat bullying and mental health problems in schools, a project investigating the effects of a new, more precise form of radiation on cancer cells and a project investigating nitrogen pollution.
