After the turbulence surrounding the casting of the traditional play "Jedermann" at the Salzburg Festival, the leading actors for next summer have been confirmed.

Philipp Hochmair and Deleila Piasko will be on stage in the new production, as the festival announced in Vienna on Friday. The Canadian Robert Carsen was presented as the director.

The renowned festival is thus relying on experience: Hochmair (50) had already stepped in for Tobias Moretti in the title role at short notice in Salzburg in 2018 and celebrated a success. He is now taking on a permanent engagement after the most recent production with Burgtheater star Michael Maertens was canceled after just one season.

Hochmair is considered an "Everyman" specialist. Around ten years ago, he developed a successful rock version of the mystery play, in which he himself slips into all the roles. "A dream come true", said Hochmair on Friday about his renewed engagement in Salzburg.

Deleila Piasko (32) takes on the role of Buhlschaft in Hugo von Hofmannsthal's "The Rich Man's Dying Game", which has been played by stars such as Christiane Hörbiger, Senta Berger and Veronica Ferres in the past. "I try to go in as freely and impartially as possible," said Piasko. The Swiss-born actress has appeared in the Netflix series "Transatlantic" and the ZDFneo thriller series "The Shadow", among others.

In October, it was announced that the Festival would not be reviving Michael Sturminger's most recent production next year after some negative reactions from audiences and the media. Sturminger and Maertens reacted with surprise and disappointment.

Robert Carsen is primarily known as an internationally sought-after opera director. "I don't really make a distinction between theater and opera," said the Canadian artist.
