Security preparations for the international Ukraine peace conference on the Bürgenstock in Nidwalden are already underway. This was announced by the cantonal government on Wednesday.

The Nidwalden cantonal police, the Lucerne police, the army and other police corps are in charge of security for the event, as announced by the Nidwalden State Chancellery on Wednesday. "We are convinced that our precautions will ensure that the peace conference runs smoothly," Karin Kayser-Frutschi, Director of Justice and Security, was quoted as saying in the press release.

For the population, there may be restrictions on traffic, airspace and hiking trails immediately before and during the conference. This is unavoidable for an event of this size. However, the canton is endeavoring to keep these as low as possible.

Delegations from up to 80 countries are expected to attend the peace conference, which is scheduled to take place on June 15 and 16 at the Bürgenstock Resort. According to President Viola Amherd, the conference is intended to be the starting point for a dialog on ways to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

The Bürgenstock was chosen as the venue because it is "well located and easy to secure", as Ambassador Gabriel Lüchinger said at a media conference. Lüchinger heads the task force for the preparation of the event.
