Nine out of ten Swiss people are aware of climate change

Nine out of ten Swiss people are aware of changes in the climate. However, in a survey conducted by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), 86 percent rate the quality of the environment in Switzerland as good.
In addition, 49% of the population believe that people in Switzerland are becoming more environmentally friendly, as the FSO announced on Thursday. The results come from a survey of 3028 randomly selected people between the ages of 15 and 74.
However, this assessment is only reflected in behavior to a limited extent, according to the FSO. When it comes to heating habits, paying attention to energy consumption, buying electrical appliances and consuming organic products, the information provided by respondents was the same as in the last survey in 2019. However, more people stated in the new survey that they never take an airplane. In 2019, the figure was 20%, in 2023 it was 26%.
Biggest threat from climate change
According to the survey, the assessment of the greatest risks to people and the environment has also changed. The proportion of respondents who consider nuclear power plants to be very dangerous fell from 41% in 2019 to 26% in 2023.
Pesticides, genetic engineering and mobile phone antennas were also considered less dangerous. The greatest dangers for people and the environment are attributed to the loss of biodiversity, climate change and water scarcity.
According to the FSO, the consumption of meat was also surveyed for the first time. Twelve percent of respondents stated that they consumed meat every day. Eleven percent consume meat less than once a week and six percent never consume meat at all.
