The "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" (NZZ) has made it to second place in a survey of the world's most renowned newspapers conducted by the International Media Help Association (IMH). 14.4 percent of the 3,000 respondents voted for the Zurich-based newspaper, as IMH announced on Tuesday.
This put the "NZZ" only behind the "Wall Street Journal" from the USA, which was voted for by 17.2 percent of respondents. The fact that the "NZZ" has such a good reputation seems to be due to its new course and the generally positive, neutral reputation of Switzerland, the IMH added.
The "New York Times" from the USA was in third place, with the "Financial Times" from the UK in fourth. It was followed by "El Pais" from Spain, "Le Figaro" from France and the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung". In eighth place was the "Jerusalem Post" from Israel.
Unchanged from the last survey, "L'Osservatore Romano" from the Vatican City State, which has been in existence since 1861, came in ninth place. The top ten was completed by the "Yomiuri Shimbun" newspaper from Japan - currently the newspaper with the highest circulation in the world. A further 7.1 percent of respondents voted for other newspapers.
IMH is the association of German-language media abroad and foreign-language media in Germany. At the turn of the year, it conducted a survey for the fifth time to determine which newspapers enjoy the highest reputation worldwide.
In each of 50 countries, 60 people were asked by email and telephone which internationally circulated newspaper they thought was the best. The respondents included entrepreneurs, journalists, teachers, university lecturers, politicians, advertising experts and other groups of people. In the last survey from 2005, in which 1000 people were questioned, the "Financial Times" came first.
