Parliament Rejects Importation Ban on Foie Gras

The Swiss government has decided to allow the import of foie gras into the country, but it must be labelled as such. This decision was made after the National Council and the Council of States both agreed that a ban on the import of foie gras would not be effective, as it would still be consumed in the country. The debate was sparked by a motion from Martin Haab (SVP/ZH) in February 2022, which initially called for a ban on the import of foie gras. However, the National Council and the Council of States both decided that a ban would not be effective and instead opted for a labelling requirement. This decision was opposed by animal rights activists, who argued that the force-feeding of ducks and geese is cruel. An initiative to ban the import of foie gras is currently being circulated in Switzerland, led by the organisation Alliance Animale Suisse. In Switzerland, the force-feeding of birds is already prohibited. According to Alliance Animale Suisse, the country imports 200,000 kilograms of goose foie gras each year.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
