Police catch last escapee from Valais education center

Following the escape from the closed Pramont education center in Granges in Valais at the beginning of February, the police arrested the last fugitive on Wednesday evening. The young man had fled to France.
The arrest in France was preceded by intensive search measures by the cantonal police, with the support of their colleagues from France and other cantons, as well as joint investigations with the public prosecutor's office and the juvenile court. This was announced by the Valais cantonal police on Thursday.
During the night of February 4, ten teenagers and young men aged between 17 and 24 escaped from the closed education center. Among other things, they had attacked and locked up a guard, who was slightly injured.
The men then fled in a vehicle stolen nearby. By mid-February, the police had made several arrests and caught nine of the ten escapees.
Series of outbreaks
It was not the first escape from the education center. At the end of August 2023, young people had already broken out of the closed facility for minors and young adults and fled in a stolen vehicle.
Back in February 2023, two young people aged 16 and 17 were on the run for an hour before they were found by the police after an intensive search on the grounds of the center.
Increased monitoring
Criticism was voiced after this series of outbreaks. A few days after the last outbreak in February, the canton of Valais announced that it would immediately step up security measures. A private security guard is now deployed to monitor the area at night.
According to the security authorities, this change will allow the number of guards at the facility to be increased to two between 9.00 pm and 6.00 am. The canton also announced that additional cameras, a new security fence, exterior lighting and motion detectors would be installed throughout the facility.
