The environmental organization Pro Natura is recommending a Yes vote on the so-called Energy Cloak Decree, which will be put to the Swiss electorate on 9 June. This was decided by the organization's Council of Delegates on Saturday.
The significant and urgently needed progress in the expansion of renewable energies, which would be made possible by the law, tipped the scales in favor of the Yes vote, Pro Natura wrote in a press release on Saturday. Ultimately, the advantages for the energy transition outweigh the disadvantages in terms of nature conservation.
These disadvantages, i.e. the potentially negative effects of the decree on nature and the landscape, could not be denied. They were debated in detail on Saturday.
The Federal Act on a Secure Electricity Supply from Renewable Energy Sources, as the electricity decree is called, provides for measures to ensure security of supply. In doing so, Parliament wants to promote a faster expansion of renewable energies to achieve the climate targets.
Fondation Franz Weber (FFW) is leading the referendum against the bill. Initially, a small alliance led by Pierre-Alain Bruchez from Neuchâtel fought against the decree, later joined by the Swiss Free Landscape Association and the FFW. The referendum leaders criticize that the law was passed in haste and goes too far.
