Railroad employee dies when a freight train derails in Bern

A railroad employee was killed in the derailment of a freight train in Bern early on Thursday morning. This was reported by the Bern cantonal police.

The man was shunting in the Bern-Weyermannshaus freight yard shortly after 4.30 a.m. when a freight wagon derailed for an unknown reason and lost part of its load. The man was then hit by the derailed wagon and fatally injured.

According to the police, the victim is a 22-year-old Swiss national from the canton of Bern. According to the police, further investigations into the circumstances of the accident are being carried out in collaboration with the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (Sust).

Delays and cancellations

After the accident, the entire overhead line was temporarily switched off for safety reasons. This affected rail traffic. There were delays and train cancellations on the Bern-Freiburg line.

From 7 a.m., the railroad lines were open again. After that, commuters still had to put up with delays. The recovery work on the train in the freight yard was still underway at midday on Thursday.
