According to a report, missiles supplied to Russia from North Korea were constructed using a number of components from Western countries. This was the result of an analysis of the debris of a North Korean-made ballistic missile that fell in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, according to the organization Conflict Armament Research.
According to the findings, 290 electronic parts were installed in the missile that did not originate from the East Asian country. As a result, many of them could be attributed to companies headquartered in the USA, as well as Germany and other countries.
A large proportion of the components were also dated and had been produced in the past three years, the report continued. This could mean that the weapon only arrived in Russia after the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022.
This shows that North Korea is succeeding in circumventing the UN sanctions against the country for ballistic missile components, the report continued. At the same time, however, it is also an indication of how much the country is dependent on imports from abroad.
According to the report, it is mainly about parts that were installed in the navigation system of the missiles. In addition to the USA and Germany, parts from Singapore, Japan, Switzerland, China, the Netherlands and Taiwan were also found.
The London-based organization Conflict Armament Research, whose work is partly funded by the EU, investigates weapons systems in war zones to determine the supply chains that were used to manufacture them.
