Scholz: Did not provoke the traffic lights to break

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has denied the accusation that he deliberately caused the break-up of his "Ampel" coalition. "I did not provoke him," said the SPD politician on the ARD program "Caren Miosga". He had fought until the end to keep the three-party constellation of SPD, Greens and FDP together, but that was ultimately not possible. "I put up with the fact that I kept putting on a good face for compromise and cooperation, sometimes even making a pretty bad face. But when it's over, it has to be over," said Scholz.
The Federal Chancellor also defended his public, personal reckoning with FDP leader Christian Lindner. "It was decent, clear and straightforward and very understandable for all citizens," he said. There had often been calls for him to hit the table more often. At the same time, he emphasized: "Without my repeated efforts to achieve cooperation and compromise, the government would not have lasted this long. It wouldn't even have come into being."
