Around two and a half weeks before the planned Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has expressed hope for the event. In his evening speech on Wednesday, Zelenskyi said that Russia was exerting pressure on states not to take part. At the same time, he emphasized: "Russia is no longer in a position to disrupt the summit, even if it goes to great lengths to do so." Ukraine is making efforts every day to win over further participating states. Australia had recently agreed to participate.

At Ukraine's request, Switzerland is organizing the meeting on 15 and 16 June on the Bürgenstock near Lucerne. The summit aims to mobilize more international support for the country attacked by Russia. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) intends to travel to the meeting on behalf of Germany. Ukraine hopes to convince neutral countries or even countries that are friends with Russia of its position, as well as countries that support it. China in particular is being courted.

The meeting is not about direct negotiations with Russia, but as a first step about working out peace prospects. Moscow has not been invited, but refuses to participate anyway.
