The Schaffhausen electorate could sink the new Axpo contracts: according to the results available so far, a "no" vote is possible. This would mean that the electricity company would not receive a new legal basis - despite the approval of all eight other owner cantons.
The final result is not yet available. But after the municipalities counted by 1.20 p.m. on Sunday, there is still no clear result - and the city of Schaffhausen, which is likely to lean more towards the No camp, is still outstanding.
All eight other owner cantons have already approved the agreement. If Schaffhausen were to vote no, however, it would be off the table. The efforts of the last eight years would be nullified, the Schaffhausen government stated in the voting magazine.
Axpo, Switzerland's largest electricity company, would gain the necessary strategic flexibility with the new contracts, the proponents argued. The referendum committee, on the other hand, warned that they would offer no protection against foreign takeovers.
