Car owners and dealers in Switzerland advertised more vehicles in the first three months of 2024. Second-hand electric cars in particular were offered more frequently.

Overall, the number of advertised vehicles increased by 5.4 percent to a total of 330,000, as Autoscout24 announced on Friday. This was the highest number in a single quarter since the start of the pandemic, according to the report. Of these, 52,000 were new cars.

The supply of used vehicles increased by +5.6% to 283,000 used vehicles in the first quarter. The number of electric vehicles rose at an above-average rate. From January to March 2024, around 4,200 more electric vehicles were advertised on the online marketplace than in the previous quarter. This corresponds to an increase of a third. "Within two years, the supply of pure electric vehicles has even doubled," AutoScout24 CEO Alberto Sanz de Lama is quoted as saying in the press release.

However, advertisements for cars with other alternative drive systems also increased, according to the report. For full hybrids, the increase in supply was 23.1 percent, advertisements for plug-in hybrids rose by 18.7 percent and those for mild hybrids by 11.6 percent. However, the increases were all in the low four-digit range.

"Although the majority of vehicles on AutoScout24 are still petrol or diesel vehicles, their share is decreasing," the press release states.

Stable prices

Meanwhile, prices remained stable at a high level, according to reports. The average price for a new car on the platform was CHF 60,680, while a used car was available for an average of CHF 37,780.

Prices for full hybrids rose the most (-3.5% to 36,930 francs), while prices for buses fell the most on average (-2.1% to 37,000 francs).
