For the years 2025 to 2028, the federal government is funding research institutions of national importance with CHF 432 million. This means they will receive CHF 28 million less than in the previous period.

The funding will go to a total of 35 institutions. Ten technology competence centers will receive the most money with a total amount of around 208 million francs, as announced by the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER) on Thursday. Research infrastructures will receive 149 million francs and research institutions 75 million francs.

The federal government's support is subsidiary in nature and supplements the financial contributions of the cantons, universities, the private sector and public organizations.

According to the EAER, funding decisions are based on the expert assessment of the Swiss Science Council (SSC), the priorities set out in the Dispatch on the Promotion of Education, Research and Innovation (ERI Dispatch) 2025-2028 and the financial framework approved by Parliament.
