The Swiss Federal Council has proposed a ban on tobacco and e-cigarette advertising in printed media from 2026 in order to protect children and young people from smoking. This is in line with the initiative "Children and Young People without Tobacco Advertising" which was accepted by the people and cantons in February 2022. The Council also wants to ban tobacco industry sponsorship of national events attended by minors. The Council's proposals have been met with criticism from the advertising industry and the tobacco industry. The Council of States' Commission for Social Security and Health (SGK-S) has decided to allow tobacco advertising in the interior of newspapers and magazines aimed mainly at adults. It also wants to allow tobacco advertising in publicly accessible places, provided it is not visible or accessible to minors. The Commission also wants to remove the reporting requirement for tobacco industry advertising, promotion and sponsorship from the proposal. The Commission believes that the initiative should be implemented with moderation and that the partial revision of the Tobacco Products Act should not go beyond the demands of the initiative. The proposal will be discussed in the Council of States in the autumn session.nnnnnnnnnn
