Production in Switzerland's secondary sector increased in the third quarter. The figures for both industry and construction were up on the previous year.

In the entire secondary sector of the economy, i.e. in industry and construction, production rose by 3.3% between July and September compared to the same period in the previous year, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Monday. At the same time, turnover increased by 5.5 percent.

In the industrial sector, production increased by 3.5% compared to the previous year. This was thanks to a strong July with double-digit growth. In August and September, however, industry produced less than in the previous year. The trend within the quarter was therefore downwards.

Turnover in the industrial sector increased even more strongly by 5.7%. Here too, however, July was the strongest month, while September was the weakest with a slight increase of 0.7%.

Construction industry increases production thanks to civil engineering

Production in the construction industry also grew in the third quarter, primarily thanks to civil engineering. The construction industry as a whole recorded a quarterly increase of 2.1%. While civil engineering produced 11.8 percent more and other construction 3.7 percent more, production in building construction fell by 3.6 percent.

Turnover in the construction industry increased by 4.7% overall. The increase was particularly strong in civil engineering (+16.8%), but building construction (+2.9%) and other construction (+4.2%) also achieved higher turnover.
