The 27-year-old soprano Chelsea Marilyn Zurflüh from the canton of Bern won first prize at the 78th Geneva Music Competition on Tuesday evening. The 26-year-old Swiss composer Léo Albisetti and 30-year-old Brazilian Caio de Azevedo had already won the composition competition together on Sunday.
This year's edition of the Geneva Music Competition, which was dedicated to singing and composition, attracted 155 young musicians. Eight of them from the fields of opera singing and composition competed against each other for a week in Geneva.
Singer Jungrae Noah Kim and the two singers Barbara Skora and Chelsea Marilyn Zurflüh took part in the opera singing final on Tuesday evening at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva. They were accompanied by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (OSR) under the direction of conductor Alevtina Loffe.
The international jury, chaired by French soprano Patricia Petibon, awarded the first prize of CHF 20,000 to Chelsea Marilyn Zurflüh. She also won most of the special prizes.
The second prize (12,000 Swiss francs) went to the 30-year-old Korean baritone Jungraeh Noah Kim. The third prize was not awarded. The prizewinner will also benefit from a sponsorship program.
Solo viola and chamber orchestra
The composition final took place on Sunday evening. The subject of the competition was a work for solo viola and chamber orchestra lasting around 15 minutes. Based on the scores, the jury, chaired by French composer Pascal Dusapin, selected three finalists: Léo Albisetti from Switzerland, Caio de Azevedo from Brazil and Sang-Min Ryu from South Korea.
Their works were premiered on Sunday evening by the Geneva Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Frenchman Pierre Bleuse with three different soloists. The Swiss and the Brazilian together won the first prize (15,000 francs), the third candidate the third prize (5,000 francs). They will now also take part in the sponsorship program.
