A Swiss tourist was killed eleven days ago in the south-eastern Algerian city of Djanet. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) confirmed the woman's violent death on Tuesday to the Keystone-SDA news agency on request.
The Swiss embassy in Algiers is in contact with the relevant Algerian authorities, it added. The deceased was a member of a tour group of five people from Switzerland. The group has since left Algeria for Switzerland. For reasons of data and privacy protection, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs did not provide any further details.
According to a report in the French newspaper "Libération", the killing is said to have taken place on the terrace of a café in the city center of Djanet. According to the media report, the woman, whose identity was not disclosed, was killed by a man with a stabbing weapon. She was taken to hospital after the attack, but doctors were unable to save her.
Two men were reportedly arrested in connection with the crime. According to Algerian media, the oasis city of Djanet, which lies 2300 kilometers south of the capital Algiers, is considered a tourist gem.
In its travel advice, the FDFA advises against traveling to individual parts of Algeria. Great attention should be paid to personal safety. The risk of kidnapping is also considered to be high in certain areas of the country.
