Parliament does not want the European Convention on Human Rights to be denounced. After the National Council, the Council of States also rejected a corresponding motion from the ranks of the SVP on Wednesday.

Jakob Stark (SVP/TG) demanded that Switzerland should denounce the convention at the earliest possible date. However, the Council rejected the motion by 37 votes to 6 with one abstention. The previous day, the National Council had already rejected an identical motion. The motions are therefore off the table.

By contrast, the small chamber adopted a motion by Andrea Caroni (FDP/AR) by 32 votes to 12 with no abstentions. He called for the European Court of Human Rights to focus on its core task. He wants to instruct the Federal Council to work towards this goal together with other states. This motion will go to the National Council.

The background to this is the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of the climate seniors in April 2024, in which the Court ruled that Switzerland had failed to meet its human rights obligations with regard to climate protection. Critics complain that the ruling undermines democratic decisions.
