Compared to other European countries, many voters in Switzerland would give their vote to Donald Trump - around a quarter. This is significantly more than in Scandinavia and Switzerland's neighboring countries, for example. These are the findings of a survey conducted by the Gallup polling institute.
It was conducted in 43 countries among 41,000 adults. The Tamedia titles first reported on it on Monday evening.
In Switzerland, significantly more respondents were in favor of the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris: 61%. However, 25 percent would also vote for the Republican Donald Trump. In Western European countries, only the UK and Greece were higher at 27% and 33% respectively.
US image would deteriorate
In Denmark, for example, only four percent are in favor of Trump. In Finland and Norway, the figure is seven percent each, in the Netherlands eleven percent, in Germany and France 13 percent each, in Austria 16 percent and in Italy 18 percent. By contrast, support for Trump is high in Eastern Europe: in Serbia, Hungary and Bulgaria, around half of those surveyed would vote for him.
Gallup also asked whether the USA's reputation in the world would improve or deteriorate with Trump. Overall, only 19% of respondents thought that the situation would improve with Trump. In this question, the Swiss were more critical of the Republican: 16% stated that the image of the USA would improve with him, while 59% expect it to deteriorate.
