The European migration pact, which was formally adopted by the EU member states on Tuesday, will have an impact on Switzerland. The Swiss Confederation will have to implement the points relating to the further development of the Schengen and Dublin acquis.

Five of the ten newly adopted legal acts are - at least partially - binding for Switzerland, as the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) announced in April. Among other things, Switzerland would have to adopt regulations in the area of data comparison and the establishment and verification of identity.

Switzerland has two years to transpose the new provisions into national law. However, the new regulations would not require a complete overhaul of Swiss procedures, explained Federal Councillor Beat Jans at the time when asked by Keystone-SDA. The Basel resident described the pact as "progress" and Switzerland could benefit greatly from it.

The new solidarity mechanism, which provides for resettlement or financial contributions to countries with high migration pressure, is not binding for Switzerland. However, it can decide to join the pact. The new procedures at the external borders of the Schengen area are also not binding for Switzerland.
