The appeal proceedings against the Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan were opened in Geneva on Monday. The 61-year-old is accused of raping and sexually assaulting a woman in a Geneva hotel room in October 2008.

Ramadan was acquitted at first instance. The public prosecutor's office and the plaintiff appealed against this. The trial opened with a hearing for the 57-year-old woman who claims to have been raped by Ramadan. "I have appealed because the verdict has not brought me peace and I feel that I have not received justice," she said.

"I have experienced unimaginable things since the proceedings began," said the plaintiff. She emphasized that she had been subjected to threats for years and had been slandered by people she did not know. "I reported a rape and I am surprised that I was not recognized as a victim".

The trial is scheduled until Wednesday.
