The Touring Club of Switzerland (TCS) expects the interruption of the San Bernardino highway to have a major impact on the Gotthard route. It recommends that travelers avoid driving south at the weekend if possible and consider an alternative route.
If someone from Zurich wanted to travel to the Ligurian coast in Italy, for example, the Lötschberg-Simplon axis would be an option, said TCS media spokeswoman Vanessa Flack on Monday in response to an inquiry. If, for example, you want to drive from the Chur area towards the Lugano region, you have the Lukmanier Pass as an alternative. The train should also be considered as an alternative, Flack continued.
The TCS will soon have a separate section on its website for alternative routes to the A13. There is already one for the Gotthard route. In this section, the Touring Club provides information about closures and detour options.
As long as the A13 at Lostallo GR is closed, there will certainly be additional traffic on the alternative routes through or over the Alps, said Jérôme Jacky from the Federal Roads Office (Astra) on Monday. "We are currently analyzing what measures we can take to keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible on these other routes," said Jacky.
Astra is already informing road users of the closed A 13 on large display boards along the highways. In western Switzerland, the route over the Simplon Pass is recommended for the journey south.
Every road user can contribute to ensuring smooth traffic flow in the coming weeks by planning travel routes and travel times as well as possible, said Jacky.
