The Council of States does not want a tougher stance towards temporarily admitted persons. Those who are not granted asylum in Switzerland but cannot be sent back to their home country should still be able to bring family members to Switzerland.
On Wednesday, the Council of States rejected two identical motions by the SVP parliamentary group and SVP Councillor of States Esther Friedli (SG) by 20 votes to 18 and with four abstentions. The National Council had already approved the parliamentary group's motion. With the double no, the motions are now off the table.
The Council of States followed the majority of the Political Institutions Committee (SPK-S). Family reunions, of which only a few are approved, are not a good way to control immigration, said spokesperson Stefan Engler (center/GR). A ban would run counter to the right to respect for family life and private life.
Justice Minister Beat Jans warned against a yes vote. The motions violated the constitution and international law. Moreover, the hurdles for family reunification are already high today.
