The European Film Awards will be held in Switzerland for the first time this Saturday. The Culture and Convention Center (KKL) in Lucerne will be the venue for a gathering of the European film world, including world stars. Two films with Swiss participation can hope to win a prize.

The best European films of the year will be honored in eleven categories at the awards ceremony. A Swiss film has also been nominated in the main "Best Film" category: the stop-motion animation film "Sauvages" by Valais director Claude Barras. Switzerland is also in the running for the award for Best Short Film with "2720" by Swiss-Portuguese director Basil da Cunha.

However, the spotlight is mainly on international stars. One of the favorites is the melodrama "The Room Next Door" by Spanish director and screenwriter Pedro Almodóvar. Not only is it nominated for "Best Film", Almodóvar is also nominated for Best Director and Best Screenwriter. British actress Tilda Swinton is nominated for Best Actress for her leading role in the film.

From Ralph Fiennes to Isabella Rossellini

The internationally famous nominees also include Daniel Craig, for the film "Queer". Ralph Fiennes has also been nominated for Best Actor for "Conclave". He has confirmed that he will be attending the awards ceremony.

Italian actress and director Isabella Rossellini is another international star at the award ceremony. She will accept the award for the best European contribution to world cinema. And German director Wim Wenders will receive a lifetime achievement award. French actress Juliette Binoche will also be in attendance. She is the President of the European Film Academy.

A few days ago, CEO and Director Matthijs Wouter Knol told the Keystone-SDA news agency that the European Film Awards wanted to make the public aware that European cinema is alive and well. For him, Switzerland as the venue represents an opportunity to incorporate the different parts of the country and languages into the awards.

The European Film Awards will be presented in the presence of Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, as announced by the Federal Department of Home Affairs. The awards ceremony begins at 8 p.m. and can be followed on the SRF livestream.
