At five o'clock sharp in the morning and at a relatively mild six degrees, the traditional big bang over the Lucerne lake basin opened the Lucerne Carnival on Thursday. The "most beautiful days of the year" began for thousands of carnival enthusiasts with the Fritschi day watch.

After the deafening bang and a short ride, the Nauen docked at Schweizerhofquai in the early morning darkness with the head of the carnival, Brother Fritschi, and his entourage.

From there, the procession - accompanied by numerous Guggenmusigen - made its way to Kapellplatz, where a storm of paper cutlets, the so-called "Fötzeliräge", rained down on the carnival revellers.

Kick-off at the Zunft zu Safran

The carnival kick-off with the Fritschi day watch is traditionally in the hands of the Zunft zu Safran in Lucerne. From 2 p.m., the Fritschi parade with 44 numbers makes its way across the lake basin to Neustadt. The carnival festivities in Lucerne continue until the night of Ash Wednesday.

The Wey parade then takes place on Güdismonday, and a final highlight is the monster parade of the Vereinigte Guggenmusigen through the old town on Tuesday evening.

Dirty Thursday" also marks the start of the fifth season in other cantons in Central Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Aargau, Solothurn, Fribourg, Valais and Ticino.
