The Swiss citizens' movement Mass-Voll, Friends of the Constitution, Upright Switzerland, the Pirate Party and SVP parliamentarians have launched a popular initiative called "For the Effective Protection of Constitutional Rights (Sovereignty Initiative)". The initiative aims to protect the constitutional rights of Swiss citizens and defend the sovereignty of Switzerland. It seeks to prevent international agreements from infringing on the rights guaranteed by the Swiss Constitution. The initiative would require all existing and future international agreements to be reviewed for compliance with the constitutional rights and would prevent Swiss authorities from submitting to the application or interpretation of foreign actors. It would also require the Swiss government to terminate any agreement that violates the constitutional rights without delay. The initiative would also require all Swiss courts to be bound only by federal laws and international agreements that have been approved by referendum. If accepted by the people and the cantons, the constitutional articles would be directly applicable to all existing and future constitutional provisions and international obligations of the federal government, cantons and municipalities. The initiative seeks to ensure that the people of Switzerland remain in control of their own destiny.
