The Council of European Bishops' Conferences has decided to move its General Secretariat from St.Gallen to Rome. According to the press release, the Swiss Church and St.Gallen are thus losing a touch of internationality.

The General Secretariat of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences will move to Rome by the end of April 2024, according to a statement from the Catholic denomination of the Canton of St.Gallen on Friday. After 47 years in St. Gallen and previously 6 years in Chur, this marks the end of an era.

The European bishops justify the move to Rome with more opportunities for spontaneous exchange and the proximity to the papal universities. Other continental bishops' conferences such as the African, Latin American and Asian conferences would also meet regularly in Rome.

The Council of European Bishops' Conferences was founded in 1971. Representatives of Catholic churches from 39 countries currently belong to the body. According to the press release, it was thanks to the Episcopal Vicar and later Bishop of St.Gallen, Ivo Fürer, that the General Secretariat was established in St.Gallen in 1977.
