The Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) has issued new measures for poultry farms on the entire Swiss shore of Lake Constance to contain avian influenza. On Monday, the bird flu virus was detected in a Mediterranean gull in Triboltingen TG.

The FSVO has set up an observation zone within a radius of three kilometers along the shores of Lake Constance, as the federal government wrote in a press release on Thursday. "Strict protection and hygiene measures apply to poultry farms in this zone with the aim of containing the spread of the virus and protecting poultry farms."

The main aim is to avoid contact between wild birds and domestic poultry. The corresponding regulation comes into force on December 14 and is valid until March 31, 2025.

On Monday, the "highly pathogenic form of avian influenza H5N1" was detected in a Mediterranean gull found sick in Triboltingen TG, the canton of Thurgau announced on Wednesday. Following a case in a dead swan in the canton of Uri, this is the second detection in wild birds in Switzerland this season.
