The Gotthard Pass road has been closed for the winter since Thursday. This means that another link between northern and southern Switzerland will be closed for several months.
With the closure of the Gotthard Pass road, all five Uri Alpine passes are now closed, as announced by the Uri Building Department. These are the Furka, Klausen, Oberalp, Susten and Gotthard passes. As a rule, they could be reopened between mid-May and the beginning of June.
The possible north-south connections for road and rail traffic will therefore be further restricted by the winter closure now imposed on the Gotthard Pass. At the beginning of November, SBB announced that the Gotthard Base Tunnel will probably not be fully available for passenger and freight trains until September 2024 following the derailment of a freight train in August.
The train journey to Ticino or back will be longer because the majority of passenger trains between German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino will be diverted via the panoramic route.
In addition to the Uri Alpine passes, the Col du Lein, Grimsel Pass, Great St. Bernhard Pass, Nufenen Pass, San Bernardino Pass, Sanetsch Pass and the Umbrail Pass are also closed, according to the TCS breakdown service.
