German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser defended the border controls introduced to Switzerland at the meeting of EU interior ministers in Luxembourg. According to the minister, these controls are only a temporary solution and are primarily aimed at combating smuggling. Faeser hopes that the joint EU asylum and migration package and other measures, including increased external border protection, will improve the situation, although these measures are not yet in force. Once implemented, open borders can be worked with again. Faeser also emphasized that the controls are only "partial and location-specific" and that neither cross-border trade nor normal border traffic should be affected as much as possible. She also mentioned that there have been border controls between Austria and Germany for several years and that this works very well. In summary, Faeser defended the border controls to Switzerland as a temporary solution to combat smuggling, while emphasizing that the controls should not affect cross-border trade or normal border traffic.
