Thousands of liters of heating oil pollute Freiburg’s rivers

Around 2000 to 3000 liters of heating oil polluted the Biberen Canal, the Grand Canal and the Broye Canal between Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Murten on Friday afternoon. The ecosystem was severely affected, according to the Fribourg cantonal police.
So far, the Fribourg authorities have not recorded any deaths of fish or other animals, according to the press release issued on Friday evening. There is no danger to the population. According to initial findings, the drinking water is not contaminated.
The lake police have closed the Broye Canal from the entrance to Lake Neuchâtel to the entrance to Lake Murten until further notice. Oil barriers have been erected to prevent the spill from spreading.
According to the press release, the spill originated from a company in Ried near Kerzers FR. Due to carelessness, an estimated 2000 to 3000 liters of heating oil dripped onto the ground and entered the sewer. Those responsible have been identified.
