One female candidate and two male candidates are vying for the vacant seat in the Jura government following the resignation of Jacques Gerber (FDP). Pauline Godat (Greens), Stéphane Theurillat (center) and Pascal Prince from the Mouvement Helvethica are running on 24 November, while the FDP has not put anyone forward.
The centrist candidate and the Green candidate are favored in the election against the representative of the Mouvement Helvethica. This emerged during the coronavirus pandemic as a movement of skeptics of the measures. A second round of voting in the event of a run-off is scheduled for December 15.
Jacques Gerber (FDP), Jura's Director of Health and Economic Affairs, announced his resignation at the beginning of September. In future, he will head the Ukraine program at the federal government. The FDP decided not to defend its only seat in the government. It believes that it must first rebuild itself after its defeat in the federal elections before entering the race again in the cantonal general elections in the fall of 2025. The party has stated that it does not want to put up a token candidate now.
Reclaiming the second center seat
The aim of centrist candidate Stéphane Theurillat is to win back the second seat that the party lost to the SP in a by-election in 2020. The 44-year-old cantonal parliamentarian and city councillor in Pruntrut is supported by the FDP and the Green Liberals. The SVP, which is not taking part in the elections itself, has not yet made a recommendation.
The 35-year-old Green candidate Pauline Godat is supported by the SP, which is not entering the race itself. The current President of the Jura parliament is also receiving support from the left-wing alternative CS-POP.
There are currently two SP members in the government of the Canton of Jura, one representative each from the Christian Social Party and the Center Party and one from the FDP.
