Due to the possibility of severe thunderstorms on Friday, the Ticino crisis team has once again defined evacuation zones for the upper Maggia and Bavona valleys, which have already been hit by storms. The morphology of the region has been "profoundly changed" by the storms.

According to information from the Ticino emergency services, the evacuation zones include the entire village of Fontana in the Bavona Valley as well as those houses in the village of Roseto that are located near the Bavona River.

In the upper Maggia Valley, parts of the villages of Prato Sornico, Peccia, Broglio, Piano di Peccia and the village of Bola-Croisa near Mogno (Ri di Röd) are defined as evacuation zones.

According to the press release, no closures are planned for car traffic in the upper Maggia Valley. However, depending on how the situation develops, selective or total restrictions are conceivable across the entire affected area.

"Consequences of rain difficult to assess"

The precautionary measures were taken due to the severe weather expected on Friday and the current "hydrogeological instability".

The current hydrogeological conditions, the current water flow in the vicinity of residential buildings and the morphology of the area, which has undergone profound changes, require particular caution, the Ticino emergency management team notes.

It is difficult to predict the "reaction" of the river catchment areas even to rainfall with a lower intensity than on the night of June 29-30.
