Train derails in Ticino – line closed in Sigirino near Lugano

An empty passenger train derailed on a regional train line in Ticino on Friday. According to the police, there was extensive damage to the train and the infrastructure. Train traffic was temporarily interrupted between Taverne and Rivera.
No one was injured in the accident at midday, according to the Ticino cantonal police. The reason for the derailment of the empty Tilo train was initially unclear. At the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency, an SBB spokesperson did not provide any information on the course of events or the circumstances. An investigation has been launched.
Buses were used to transport passengers in the region. Rail services should resume on Saturday morning, according to SBB.
