An Eritrean man must answer to the Zurich High Court today for attempted murder. In May 2021, he pushed a woman in front of an arriving train at Zurich main station.
The woman was only slightly injured; several passers-by helped her back onto the platform. The train driver had also initiated an emergency stop.
The 29-year-old Eritrean was sentenced to five years and ten months' imprisonment at Zurich District Court. However, the court postponed this for inpatient measures. An expert had diagnosed the accused with paranoid schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The defense lawyer demanded a significantly lower sentence from the lower court. He denied the charge of attempted murder. The defense attorney and defendant also rejected the eight-year banishment from the country.
It is undisputed that the man had pushed the random woman onto the track. The Eritrean had no explanation for this. He also has to answer for other offenses, including disrupting a church service in the canton of Schwyz.
