Following a report on the shooting of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian soldiers, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has asked the international community for help. The International Criminal Court should issue arrest warrants against the "Russian executioners and torturers", he wrote on X. At the same time, international observers and doctors should be given access to prison camps. "Executions are becoming more and more frequent, 95 percent of prisoners of war are tortured according to UN figures," he lamented.
The background to this are reports of the execution of nine Ukrainian soldiers who had surrendered during fighting in the western Russian region of Kursk after using up all their ammunition. According to Ukrainian media reports, they are said to have been executed on the spot. The Ukrainian General Prosecutor's Office in Kiev has since opened an investigation, reported "Ukrainska Pravda", among others.
Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinez called on the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to take action against this further gross violation of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War. "These acts must not go unpunished and the enemy must be held fully accountable," he wrote on the Telegram platform.
Only recently, a Russian soldier was captured who is said to have shot several Ukrainian soldiers with his comrades at the beginning of September after they had laid down their weapons. The crime was filmed by a reconnaissance drone. The public prosecutor's office in Kiev is aware of over 90 cases of Ukrainian prisoners of war being shot.
