Ukraine is seeing growing support for its peace plan in the war with Russia. Following the Ukraine conference in Davos GR on Sunday, the war-torn country is aiming for a peace summit at the highest level.
Security advisors and organizations from more than 80 countries took part in the 4th Conference on the Ukrainian Peace Formula on Sunday in Davos on Ukraine's proposals for a lasting peace with Russia. There was broad agreement among the participants on the basic principles, Andriy Yermak, Head of the Ukrainian President's Office, told the media after the meeting.
However, peace negotiations with Russia are currently not possible, Jermak made clear. He also expressed his satisfaction that more countries had recently signaled their support for Ukraine and taken part in the talks at security advisor level. There was agreement on important issues. The aim is to have a peace plan drawn up by the time of a summit of heads of state and government.
However, there was not unanimous support for the time being. "I would be lying if I said that everyone had the same opinion," said Jermak. Among other things, there was disagreement among the countries supporting Ukraine on how to bring Russia to the table.
Ukraine will China ins Boot holen
Ukraine also wants to get the superpower China on board. It is important that China is also at the table in future, said Jermak. China is close to Russia.
Jermak hinted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi could meet China's Prime Minister Li Qiang in person in Switzerland. Both are in Bern on Monday, and both will also speak at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Tuesday.
The agreement of the largest possible community of states on basic principles for a peace solution could help to bring Russia to the negotiating table one day, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis told the media on Sunday. Cassis was co-organizer of the Ukraine conference in Davos.
Cassis: Russia must also be at the table
"It takes a step to involve Russia in one way or another," said Cassis. Without Russia, there would be no peace.
It is encouraging that countries in the Brics group of emerging economies such as Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia and South Africa are keeping the channels of communication with Moscow open. The more countries get involved, not just from the West but from all over the world, the more likely it is that a creative solution can be found.
According to Cassis, the international community must move forward, even if a dialog between Kiev and Moscow cannot yet take place. "Every day that we wait, dozens of civilians die. We have no right to wait," said the Foreign Minister.
Ukraine's so-called peace formula is a ten-point plan and provides for the withdrawal of all Russian troops, punishments for Russian war criminals, reparations and security guarantees. Russia has so far rejected the peace plan as a farce.
Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian attack with Western help since February 24, 2022. Neither side is yet prepared to make any concessions, said Cassis. There is still a long way to go before a peaceful solution is found.
Demonstrators cause long traffic jams
Preparations for the World Economic Forum (WEF), which begins in the Alpine resort on Monday, were underway in Davos GR at the same time as the Ukraine summit was taking place under strict security precautions.
Around 350 demonstrators demanding climate justice and an end to the annual WEF elite meeting attracted attention on Sunday. They temporarily blocked the access road to the conference venue. A traffic jam of over 18 kilometers was created.
At an authorized rally on the Postplatz in Davos, they criticized the "most powerful and richest" in the world, who in their opinion are responsible for climate problems and social injustice.
