The flags of many United Nations offices around the world were lowered to half-mast on Monday to commemorate the 101 UN staff members killed so far in the Gaza war.

Never before had so many UN employees been killed in such a short space of time, said Tatjana Walowaja, Director-General of the UN office in Geneva. The dead worked for the UN Palestinian Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), according to the organization.

UN agencies in the Middle East, Europe, Africa and Asia, among others, posted photos of flags at half-mast on social media. In Geneva, the headquarters of UN organizations for emergency aid, health, human rights and refugees, numerous employees gathered for a minute's silence "to pay tribute to our brave colleagues who sacrificed their lives in the service of the UN flag," said Walowaja.
